Remains found in grave are Pearl's: US official

The DNA tests that were conducted on a body found in a shallow grave in Karachi have confirmed it to be of the slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, a US official said on Friday.

The Pakistani police have been informed of the results, the official said.

He added the test results had been known for some time. Pearl disappeared on January 23 in Karachi while researching links between Pakistani extremists and a man who was caught in December on a flight from Paris to Miami with explosives in his shoes.

A body believed to be the American correspondent's was found last month near a shed in Karachi, where he disappeared.

The decapitated body was found near a mud hut in which police said they recovered a car seat on which Pearl was sitting in photographs that accompanied emails sent to media organisations by his kidnappers.
