US forces had removed vital evidence of the bombing raid on a wedding party in Afghanistan by going back to the scene soon after and "cleaning" it, The Times daily said on Monday quoting a United Nations report.
Citing "discrepencies" in the American account of the incident, the UN report said US-led troops arrived at the scene right after the strikes and "cleaned the area," wiping out evidence of "shrapnel, bullets and traces of blood."
The forces tied the hands of the women there behind their backs, it added.
UN investigations, the daily said, also found no "corroboration" of a US claim that its warplanes launched the strike to counter anti-aircraft fire from the ground.
According to Afghan officials, 48 people were killed and 117 wounded when US forces bombed the wedding party in Urzugan province on the night of June 30.
UN sources were quoted as saying that the report was prepared by "experienced and reputable UN people, who have been in the region a while and know it well."
It said that an in depth investigation should be carried out to ensure that that such tragedies are not repeated and that the protection of civilian lives becomes a primary concern in the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan, The Times added.
