Two Indian Americans among
13 new White House fellows

Two Indians are among the 13 chosen as new White House fellows, a list of which has been announced by US President George W Bush.

The two are Balan R Ayyar (36) and Rajeev V Venkayya (35).

They have been selected by the President's Commission on White House Fellowships to participate in America's most prestigious fellowship programme for leadership development and public service, a White House press release said.

While Ayyar hails from Sumner and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force, Venkayya hails from Dayton and is a co-director at the Medical Intensive Care Unit and an assistant professor of medicine at the Division of Pulmonary and Critical care Medicine, University of California.

The mission of the non-partisan White House fellows programme, as established by President Johnson in 1964, is to develop America's future leaders by giving the fellows first hand, high-level experience with the workings of the federal government and increasing their sense of participation in national affairs, the press release said.

Selection as a White House fellow is based on a record of remarkable professional achievement early in a career, evidence of leadership potential, a proven commitment to public service, and the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute successfully at the highest levels of the federal government, it added.
