Ramzi bin al-Shibh, a suspect in the September 11 terror attacks, was in American custody in Germany, US television networks reported on Friday.
He handled logistics and money matters and entered Pakistan just before the attacks, ABC News said.
Bin al-Shibh was detained in Pakistan, it said.
In a recent interview with the Qatar-based Al Jazeera channel, Bin al-shibh had claimed that he was among those who planned the attacks.
It was believed that he tried to be the 20th hijacker in the suicide attacks, but visa problems prevented him from entering the US from Germany, ABC News quoted US intelligence as saying.
He was believed to have been a roommate of Mohammed Atta, the leader of the terrorists who hijacked the planes on September 11.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency declined to comment on the report.
