Is this Cricket or Chess: White vs Black

There could be more than one explanation for the madness exhibited by "white" Denness. The simplest of the lot is that he is white and amongst them there is nobody in the same class as a Tendulkar or a Lara. This is the best way people like him use to give vent to their feelings.

The other way to look at it is to understand that this man has very little knowledge on the game and that is surprising as he has played the game himself. But then, a man who has played the game need not have an understanding of the rules except for the basic laws.

Taking a second look at the sentences given to Sehwag and Tendulkar, it makes me wonder as to whether theft is a bigger crime as compared to a murder. A person gets punished more for appealing as compared to a man who has tampered with the ball. Strange!

So is it that as in chess, it is the white piece which will have an upper hand most of the time. Do black pieces stand a chance? Looks like the dress code for Asian countries would soon be black instead of white, which will help fools like Denness repeat the atrocity that has just been committed.

Mind you! I am not against punishment. But why not pick a Pollock, Kallis, Waugh, McGrath or a Slater? Why only a Shoaib, Murali , Sehwag or a Tendulkar? Alas! If only I knew.

Time that match referees are also selected in the same way as umpires are. But would that make a difference?

Srinivas Krishnaswamy
