Pollock sees no sense in India calling off tour

Craig Ray

South Africa's captain Shaun Pollock cannot understand why India would even consider calling off the current tour in the wake of a series of fines and suspensions for six of their players.

"To call the tour off at this stage doesn't make sense to me," Pollock said on Wednesday. "They obviously have their reasons and feel strongly about it.

Shaun Pollock "It is nothing the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) has done. It is nothing the South African cricket team has done. It is their battle with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

"It hasn't created more needle in the series, it is a battle they (India) are having with the ICC so it doesn't really bring us into the equation."

Match referee Mike Denness has been under fire from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over disciplinary measures he took against the Indians on Tuesday.

BCCI chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya has called for former England captain Denness to be removed as match referee after he found Sachin Tendulkar guilty of doctoring the ball in the drawn second Test in Port Elizabeth.

Tendulkar was given a suspended one-match ban and fined while Denness also sanctioned five other Indian players, including captain Saurav Ganguly, for bringing the game into disrepute through excessive appealing.

The BCCI have threatened to call the tour off and return home if a satisfactory solution to the match referee problem cannot be found.

The ICC has rejected Indian calls for a review of the decision to punish Tendulkar.

The third and final Test is due to start at Centurion Park in Pretoria on Friday. South Africa lead the series 1-0.
