ICC Test Championship

The ICC Test Championship (ICCTC) runs on a rolling league basis, with the system used for calculating positions based on the results of the most recent series, home and away, between each of the teams.

The adoption of a coordinated 10-year calendar of future tours by all ICC members in February 2001 has created the long term structure on which to base the Championship.

Australia received the inaugural presentation of the trophy at Edgbaston in July during the Travelex Ashes tour.

Australia finished with a higher average of series wins than South Africa, having played fewer games over the four-year period in which its performance counted.

The 1997 Coca-Cola Ashes tour of England was the beginning of the Championship series for Australia. This year’s Kelvinator tour of India was the last series that counted in the initial table.

If Australia is not on top of the ICCTC table come mid-2002, the mace will be sent to the nation that heads the table.

Two points are allocated for winning a series and one for a drawn rubber.

Once two sides have met on a home and away basis, the most recent meeting prior to those two series ceases to count in the calculation of the ICCTC table.

Nine kilograms.

Who designed and manufactured the trophy?
The distinctive mace design trophy was commissioned by the ICC from Asprey & Garrard, a famous London-based international trophy designer with Royal warrants.

What was in the ICC’s design brief?
The brief asked for a distinctive and instantly recognisable trophy for the most prestigious team award in the game. The ICC asked for style, character and quality.

What do the various parts of the trophy mean?
The shank is in the form of a stump. The central cricket ball is surrounded by the globe and the emblems of all 10 Test-playing nations. The mace is made of gold and silver.

The new ICC logo will be added to the band in the near future.
