1st Test - Mohali

India found a new Test opener, though temporarily, in 'keeper Deep Dasgupta, who picked up from where he had left off in South Africa. Sachin Tendulkar scored a masterly 88 as the England bowlers were unable to make any inroads into the Indian batting line-up

Deep Dasgupta (100) became the sixth Indian wicketkeeper to register a Test hundred. Budhi Kunderan (192 & 100), Farokh Engineer (109 & 121) and Syed Kirmani (101* & 102) have made two hundreds each, while Vijay Manjrekar (118), who kept wickets against West Indies at Kingston in 1953, and Nayan Mongia (152) are the others to do so once.
