We continue our reader-driven series on great restaurants and eating places across the country.

Vivek Sivaprakasam recommends Amman Mess in Komarapalayam for an excellent home-cooked lunch.

Amman Mess is a small, non-airconditioned restaurant that seats just 21 people. Located in Komarapalayam, near Bhavani, a small town on the Salem-Coimbatore highway, the food here is EXCELLENT.

Though I am a frequent visitor here, I know for a fact that quite a few people from as far as Bangalore, Tutcorin, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem and Erode regularly dine at this place.

Don't think of dropping by for dinner or a Sunday lunch. Amman Mess only serves lunch from Monday to Saturday.

The owners do a great job in making you feel right at home. They themselves cook and serve vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and ensure that the place is very clean.

Not only is the food delicious but very economical too. You can have a veg thali for Rs 22, while mutton/ chicken curry will cost you Rs 20. Lunch for two would total to around Rs 100.

I would recommend the Green Chilli Boneless Chicken, Andhra style Egg Poriyal, Small Onion Egg Poriyal, Kidney/ Liver fry and Mutton Kheema Masala.

For dessert try the homemade buffalo milk curd with honey or gulkand.

How to get there

About 60 km from Salem, it is very easy to reach this restaurant located near the bus stand. Once you get into Komarapalayam ask around and you will be directed to it.
