The Common Admission Test 2006 is finally over and CAT aspirants want to know how they fared.

CAT trainer Kaushal Sharma, from T.I.M.E. offered this insight during a chat on November 19:

"VA/ RC was tougher than usual, and some of the choices were very close. Quant was relatively easier, given the fact that one had enough time to go through all the questions. Also, quite a few questions were pretty straightforward. DI/ Reasoning had a few direct sets (like the one based on averages) but, on the whole, was of the same difficulty level as last year."

For those of you who missed the chat, here's the transcript:

sumit asked, 2 questions answers were wrong what to do

Kaushal answersIn series 111, question 56 had a misprint. 8 in September should read 28, like in the other series. Otherwise, the question cannot be solved. In question 59, the correct answer is 15. These questions will probably not be considered.

riaz asked, how do u find the paper' sir...? it was tough 4 me

Kaushal answersVA/RC was tougher than usual, and some of the choices were very close. Quant was relatively easier, given the fact that one had enough time to go through all the questions. Also, quite a few questions were pretty straightforward. DI/Reasoning had a few direct sets (like the one based on averages) but, on the whole, was of the same difficulty level as last year.

Anshul asked, what are the expected cutoffs??

Kaushal answersOur first take on cutoffs: DI: 26-28 VA: 22-24 Quant: 28-30. Overall: 92-96.

These might get slightly revised as we get more feedback from test-takers.

csharma asked, hi..what do u think should be the attempt??

Kaushal answersSince an overall score of 100 would start fetching calls (provided you clear the sectional cutoffs too), 40+ attempts would have enabled one to reach this score if one has an accuracy of around 75 per cent. With a different strike rate, your number of attempts could have been a little different.

Tgrwoods32 asked, Kaushal - with so few questions, don't you think people will get/ miss calls on the basis of their answers to 1 or 2 questions?

Kaushal answersOn any test, students miss it by just one wrong answer. This test is going to be no different.

bartsimpson asked, Hello Sir, overall of 100+ would mean 1 call or all 6?

Kaushal answersThe cutoff of 92-96 that we have mentioned is for one call.

jaded asked, sir what do you think about the pragga one, the luggage one i was getting 15 as the answer somehow , that question is wrong what do you suggest ?

Kaushal answersYes, the answer to that is 15.

vkaps asked, time site is down

Kaushal answersWe are in touch with the hosting party to rectify the error. The preliminary cutoffs are being mailed to the students.

Tgrwoods32 asked, Kaushal: What do you think of the comment "Any question, set of questions can be ignored by the examiners"?

Kaushal answersThis is essentially to take care of instances where there is a mistake in the question and/ or choices.

jim asked, Hello Sir, my approx scores are QA - 64, DI - 40 VA - 17 attempted...I'm sure the QA and DI scores wont change much. What would my status?

Kaushal answersYou are likely to miss the sectional cutoff in VA. Otherwise, you would be clearing the overall cutoff. But your score in VA might also change when you check the key put up on different sites.

scr asked, hi, i can forsee my score as about: 30+ in QA, 60+ in VA, 30+ in DI. what r my chances?

Kaushal answersIf you are actually getting these scores, congratulations!

rakesh asked, QA-45+ , DI 40+ VA 30+ , what could be the score ?

Kaushal answersYour overall score would be the sum of sectional scores.

tripa asked, HeMan says, Hello Kaushal... I suppose I would be able to clear the verbal and DI cutoffs but in Quant, I am getting around 37... what do u think... any chances of clearing the cutoff? Khush Hoja-- u will clear all

Kaushal answersYou are likely to clear the cutoff in Quant.

madhu asked, sir, what score with an average accuracy level can an individual attempt of DI - 16, VA/RC- 22 and Quant - 16 fetch?

Kaushal answersBetween 30 and 40, on an overall attempt of 54.

suraj asked, was this CAT tougher than the previos CAT or easier according to u sir?

Kaushal answersDI was of the same level, Quant was a little easier, and VA was tougher.

arpit asked, how can i log on to time website ??? It is asking for a password .. I am a regular TIME stuedent

Kaushal answersWe are in touch with the hosting party to rectify the error. The preliminary cutoffs are being mailed to the students.

rakesh asked, QA-45+ , DI 40+ VA 30+ , what could be the score , any chances of IIM calls ?

Kaushal answersYes, we have already mentioned the likely cutoffs: VA 22-24, DI 26-28, Q 28-30. Overall 92-96.

Avinash asked, will someone post up the 111 key

Kaushal answersT.I.M.E. will be putting the key by 5 pm provided the error with the site is rectified by then. Else, we will be mailing the key to students.

ritika asked, sir i think i hv entered my test serial no wrong vat to do

Kaushal answersContact the IIM admissions office immediately.

jim asked, Erreneous questions: In QA I found 2 questions(raja, praja and 630 boys) doubtful...and in VARC one question had only 3 options instead of 5. Can anyone confirm this and what will be the status of these q's ?

Kaushal answersQuestions with an errors are likely to be ignored. The '630 boys' one does not seem to have a problem though.

SaurabhS asked, The RC/VA Q's were very confusing with many matching answers so whats could be the approx accuracy this time n how many shud have been attempted to achieve the cutoff with the this approx accuracy

Kaushal answersSince there were only 25 questions, one should have read all questions. In fact, there was enough time for anyone with a decent reading speed to even read some of the passages a second time. There were quite a few questions with close choices. One should have exercised judgement in attempting questions where one was reasonably sure of the answer.

Avinash asked, kaushal 92-96 is too low a overall score for the iims

Kaushal answersWhile 92-96 looks a little low, one should keep in mind that the score one is expecting is likely to come down because of silly mistakes, as well as very close choices for some questions.

MKG asked, Hello sir! What chances a person has of getting calls from IIMs with the following scores: DI: 40, Quant: 36, RC/VA: 32

Kaushal answersPretty decent chances, with the very tentative cut-offs that we have come up with.

varun asked, what is cut off for a call from all IIMs, your best estimates please

Kaushal answersAs specified earlier, we are looking at something around 92-96 for one call.

tanatan asked, I m getting 0 in quant. any chance for any institute ?

Kaushal answersWish for people to get negative scores! On a serious note, you will certainly miss the cutoff given by us for this section.

MKG asked, Hello sir in addition I have 3 yr wrk exp.. can i expect calls frm all IIMs if i clear cutoffs?? and will the different IIms will ve different cutoffs

Kaushal answersYes, you can expect calls if you clear the cut-offs, irrespective of the number of years of work experience.

Kaushal says, Okay folks that's all for today!
