Right from the first election in 1967, the people of this Union territory have voted for only one MP: P M Sayeed. He was elected the first time as an Independent, and in 1980 he was part of the Congress-Urs, but otherwise he has remained with the Congress. And since 1977, he has faced the same opponent: Mohammed Koya. In 1996 Sayeed's winning margin was 1,134 votes.
