PM calls off Gujarat visit

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Tuesday called off his tour of flood affected areas in Gujarat in view of the terrorist attack in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

Just hours after the attack, Dr Singh chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security where Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil gave details of the incident.

The prime minister has directed that security at important religious sites in the country be stepped up.
 
The prime minister's media advisor Dr Sanjay Baru said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been intimated of the cancellation of Dr Singh's visit.

Dr Baru said the prime minister has condemned the terrorist attack has asked all state administrations to maintain law and order.
