The most dreaded militant outfit in Jammu and Kashmir, the Hizbul Mujahideen, on Friday dismissed reports that the international terror network al Qaeda has set up base in the state.

"Al Qaeda had neither any base in Jammu and Kashmir in the past nor does it have any at present," a spokesman of Hizbul said in a statement to a local news agency. A man identifying himself as the head of the Indian network of al Qaeda had reportedly called up a news agency in Srinagar on Thursday claiming that the terror outfit had set up its base in the state.

Al Qaeda's claim came two days after seven blasts ripped through Mumbai's suburban train systems.

The police are suspecting the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba and the banned Students Islamic Movement of India to be behind the blasts.
