Jammu and Kashmir authorities on Saturday exhumed a body suspected to be that of a policewoman who has been missing for over a year.

The family of the policewoman, Neelofar, has been pressing for a probe into her mysterious disappearance. The family alleges some of Neelofar's colleagues must have murdered her.

A team of forensic experts from the government medical college in Srinagar carried out the exhumation to collect samples for DNA testing.

The samples will be sent to Central Forensic Science Lab Chandigrah, police sources said.

Days after Neelofar went missing, the police fished out the body of an unidentified woman from the Dal Lake and buried her at Dalgate. The family claims the body was that of Neelofar who went missing on February 28, 2006.

This is the sixth exhumation carried out in the Valley in just a month. Five bodies were exhumed in February from various graveyards in north Kashmir after it was revealed that the army has been killing civilians and passing them off as terrorists.
