An army trooper and three intruders were killed on Friday in an encounter at Keran sector along the Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Police in Srinagar said troops of 16 Bihar regiment noticed suspicious movements along the LoC in the Keran sector, when a group of heavily armed terrorists was trying to sneak into to the Indian side.

"The group of heavily-armed intruders was challenged, upon which they started firing at the troops, resulting in on-the-spot death of one soldier and injuries to two others," a senior police officer told rediff.com.

"The troops maintained a cordon around the intruders, engaging them in a sustained gunfight at the end of which three intruders were gunned down," he added.

Sources said the injured troopers were evacuated to a hospital for treatment while a search operation was still in progress.
