INDIA WON BY 1 RUN
The Sri Lankan reply was sure and steady, thanks to what looked a match-winning partnership of 115 for the
3rd wkt between Haturasinghe and Aravinda deSilva. At the 40-over mark, the home team had opened a
massive lead - racing to 163-3 against 141-4 by the visitors at the same stage. Losing wickets at regular
intervals the Sri Lankans needed 17 runs of 18 balls with Kalpage at the crease and then required 5 runs of the
last over from Prabhakar with one wicket remaining. Off the first ball Kalpage ran three but exposed last man
Wickremasinghe who was dismissed of the next ball by a swinging yorker from Prabhakar. The Indians pulled
off a near miracle as they nosed out the home team by 1 run and with 4 balls to spare.
The Indians however lost the next two matches of the series at Kettarama (day-night) on 12-8-1993 (by 8 runs)
and at Moratuwa on 14-8-1993 vt 4 wkts.
Interestingly, the Indians lost the second match when they should have won easily. Chasing Sri Lanka's 204-7
in 50 overs, the visitors were 152-3 and 175-4. Prabhakar and Azhar put on 136 for the third wkt. When Prabh-
akar was out at 175, the Indians need 30 runs off 49 balls with six wickets in hand.. but the home side pulled
off a win with 4 balls to spare and by 8 runs.
