Beyond Pangong lake, and much closer to Leh, is the Khardung La or pass at 5,578 m. It is the world's highest road, leading to towards the Karakoram range that divides China from India. In ancient times caravans, bearing silk and other treasures plodded across this mighty range. Today the neighbourhood belongs to soldiers guarding a bleak, frail frontier.
