The journey takes about 30 hours. At places the macadam disintegrates into mud, stone and the crater-ridden surface resembles the topography of the moon. The highway traverses overwhelmingly beautiful and stark landscape. Landscape that is hauntingly quiet and peaceful. Driving out of Manali, the swift Beas river has to be forded before climbing up towards the Rohtang pass.
