College admission season is upon us. Now that results have started coming out, it's back to thinking about the future.

The big question on everyone's mind is -- will I get admission to the field and college I want?

Well, let not lack of preparedness keep you away from your goal. Here's a checklist of things to do before you start searching for a college.

Print this checklist and keep it as a ready-reckoner.

1. First thing to do is get the following documents in place:

a. Birth certificate
b. SC/ST/OBC/PH certificates
c. Set of 16 photographs
d. A Domicile certificate
e. Migration certificate, if relevant
f. Students who have not studied Hindi up to class 10 are required to produce their class 8 marks sheet as evidence of having/not having studied Hindi upto class 8. (Most north Indian colleges require this.)

Later, when the results are out, get these into place:
a. Original mark-sheet issued by the Board/school.
b. Certificate from the Head of Institution last attended.  Some people call it the Character Certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended.
c. School leaving certificate

2. Remember to make four photocopies of all the above. Most of the above will be submitted as original certificates, so photocopies are mandatory.

3. Attest all the above documents, even the photocopies. Attestation of the documents and photograph may be done by the Principal of the school last attended/a Gazetted officer/self-attested.

4. By now most of you have a sense of which field and college you want to go to. If not, the very next thing you do is understand what you like. Once that is frozen, find out which college has to offer what. Check the curriculum, the reputation, the teaching methodology, the professors, extracurricular activities, the campus, and the crowd. These are some things that should help you decide.

5. Next, create a document, with headings as given  below:

Name of the College

Admission Form Available

Admission Form Got

Admission Form to be Submitted On

Admission Form Submitted

List to be Put Up On

In the above document, list the colleges in the order of your preference. Most favorite college goes at the top, followed by the rest. Add the dates and tick mark when something is done.

Most of the colleges have already released admission forms. Go get yours too.

6. Read the admission form twice. Create a photo-copy and fill the photocopy first to check you've got everything right. Don't miss critical fields.

7. If the target college has pre-admission counseling, please get the date and time and attend this. This will give you clarity on the fee structure etc.

8. If there is no pre-admission session, ensure you get the details on the fee structure before hand. Most colleges require you to pay the fees on the day of the admission. So, be prepared with the amount and demand draft procedures.

9. Gather all your former scores, certificates, recommendation letters (if any), and awards won. Make a file of these, just in case you need it.

10. Ensure that the form and any other document do not have any spelling mistakes.

Now that you are better prepared, take a deep breath and smile. All the best!
