After centuries of isolation, the Bene Israelis had become quite Indianised. They knew no Hebrew and did not possess Jewish religious books. They took Indian names and married into the local population.
They observed only a few basic Jewish customs – Sabbath, the eating of kosher food and circumcision. By occupation they were oil pressers or telis and were called Shanwar or Saturday telis by the locals.
