I am a Linux Fan . Linux is free. Linux doesnt crash often. 24 hour support is now available for Linux. Linux web servers are widely used .Linux is widely used for research in Major Universities. More over Linux is being supported by major companies like sun, oracle and last but not the least LINUX is not a Microsoft product.

I think adoption of COM/DCOM architecture will enhance use of Windows. That's because production of applications for Windows will become cheaper and easier. Of course it is stupid to think that there is any competition to UNIX in the server market. Windows NT can't even keep my PC up. It crashes million times a day. It is worthless.

LINUX ALL THE WAY
The whole Asian continent should embrace Linux. It helps extending the life of hardware in the schools and colleges which can least afford constant costly upgrade syndrome of MS. It is about MS moves up in the value chain and solves some fundamental problems in the basic education sector with cross platform applications.

What do you mean by Linux Vs Unix Vs Windows NT ?, What are we talking about here. For small scale based application servers it is always going to Windows NT. There are lot of reasons to it, some are ease of use, support, ready availability of application software and also that it is a known devil. But Linux or for that matter Unix, is no where user friendly as NT. But when it comes to mission critical applications, it is always going to be Unix or Linux. Unix is much more expensive than Linux. The sheer reliability of Linux, is the key factor for most IT managers to go the Linux way. NT is improving, it is always improving, but it will take hell of a lot of effort from bill gates and his men to match linux. Trust Microsoft to deliver when the competition is tough. Linux is always a hackers tool, we have to wait and see, how Linux adopts in a more commercial environment, it also needs more organized support from its developers.

I have worked with both UNIX & Windows NT, and while NT does have end user appeal , it is NOT repeat NOT yet a matured OS, it still has a way to go. Simple activities like installing a new app or deinstalling an app can crash the system. NT is loaded with features and it is an OS with a future, but UNIX/LINUX is here today for those who have mission critical apps to run. While the esteemed Meena Ganesh may flash an impressive list of those who have gone with NT, we must ask HOW and WHAt are the opinions of the support staff in those organizations? Corrie

hey folks , I know things are hottin up & the war between the OS and their attempt to capture a chunk of the Indian market is in full swing.
If u wanna hear some thin about the Bills(read 666)os I should say that it hasn't the least any credibiity for stablity and scalability. Redmond and their memory hoggin application stink.(I hope some other saviour comes by to save the day).Though I haven't used Linux I hope to install it someday on our office systems.

Unix is the best, Linux being one of them (specially for Intel boxes)! In fact, Linux places itself as a better (and cheaper) choice for Intel based workstations (client machines)! Jai Open Systems!!

NT has to be paid for and perhaps that explains why many fail to appreciate that it is beyond 'documentation' s/w. The fact that LINUX is virtually free makes it far more reachable. But where is the 'hype' for the latter which is sorely missing. Let us discuss it down the 'days'.

Linux ... is the final word. No other OS can beat it when it comes to "Security", and that's what is needed by ISPs. Apart from that consider the expenses for owning NT or Unix (any flavor) box. Did I mention that Linux is eternally "FREE" (compared to other OSs - it costs nothing). Linux is hackers OS. It is being constantly hacked by millions of people worldwide - so the chances of having security holes are very less, unlike NT.
Linux -- Rules for now and will for ever :)
NT and UNIX -- take a hike, for you are competing with the best of the best.

Linux is simply better than Win NT. Just run Open Windows over it and at any day its better then NT.
LINUX is up and coming it will overtake Unix. Windows NT seems useful mostly for corporations. Remember Java. Java , Linux , each have their followers. Cost and convenience relative to needs will determine success--they all have some pros and some cons.

In my opinion, Unix is the best. Having worked on Unix for more than 7 years, I know how Unix is stable. There are Unix systems which are running continuously without rebooting for months together. Which ISP will want to shutdown and reboot the machine many times in a day. Even though Microsoft claims that NT is stable, may be they are comparing it with 95/98. Also, the security checks in the Unix are time tested by different walks of people (especially by the student community). Unix with its C2 level security is hard to hack and the ISPscan bet on the security and stability of the Unix. Regarding the user friendly software, one should admit that Unix is lagging. Since the ISPs UI is going to be completely different depending upon the individual, the Indian companies can come up with an ISP product using the X/Motif.

Unix is the choice for ISP. They don't have to be worried about night mares of NT Blue screens. Linux I have heard about it. how the development goes needs to be seen.
