the following is a joke :-)
I think Microsoft's own ISP - MSN - failed drastically in front of other ISPs because they would have used NT servers. The mails will get delivered after couple of days, users will get kicked out of network randomly.
Linux or Unix is the best choice for servers

It is the commitment of the people who use the techology that makes it successful not the product itself.
I am perhaps one the few fortunate ones who has actually worked in all three environments and neither of the three have really disappointed me.
Choose one - Choose Any One - But stick to it
Cheers

I hope Linux wins out so that the world is not at the mercy of one dominant powerful company. I am rooting for Linux over NT

Linux - an OS which has been accepted by Microsoft as its competitor for its Windows NT market share.
Unix - a OS which is designed with TCP/IP at its heart Windows NT - a marketing gimmick designed to retain the monopoly status of Microsoft.
The choice is clear Linux or Unix.
Only if Microsoft's marketing gimmick excells over a decision maker NT may have a chance. Till then it is Linux/Unix all the way.

I don't bet on any of these, this is because i can support any one of them, but in the future we will come back to the same question of which OS is best. Hence it is best to become OS INDEPENDENT and to show all over the world that Indians are the best in IT e.g ORACLE.

Unix is the best NOS as far as the computing platform is concerned based on the parameters like - reliability, performance, availability, programming support. I guess software availability, ease of use , cost of ownership are the areas where Unix has to improve further.

UNIX - will continue to dominate the big server markets and for systems which need 99.99% uptime requirement for a while.
Windows NT - will continue to dominate the desktop. The small and mid size server markets will be taken over by windows NT more.

There is nothing to be considered here. There are some very good/expensive OS's out there that do a very good job, but the best bet is one of the Unix flavors.
I have found the Debian distribution of Linux to be about as good or better than most commercial OS's. For the high load systems in a very large ISP Sun may just be worth the cost which is going to be less than anything out of Redmond.
Since I started using Linux, I have not found anything that I need to do that I can't do using Linux. I don't even use MS products on the desktop workstations anymore because of the problems involved in keeping them running. Linux would be the best choice for any application in an ISP. The Linux OS is very good and getting better with time, I have never seen a commercial company give as quick and high quality of support as I have received on the Linux mailing list and there wasn't all that finger pointing to something else.
If it has to be a commercial product go Sun. Even Alpha/Vms, which is also a very good but very expensive combination, will be less costly in the long run than anything out of Redmond.
Linux is the clear winner all around with Sun or Digital for very high end sites.

Unix the best...
The reliability factor alone is sufficient for the sake of the argument... you dont have to go anywhere tomorow...;-)
UNIX was, is and will continue to flourish...
Buy UNIX........ the best bet... dont go anywhere...anyday !!

I work for an ISP as an assistant sysadmin. We use a mix of Linux and BSD in the office. The only NT servers are the ones we are forced to buy in order to pacify our customers. We also average 10-20 domains per machine running on mid range pentiums. Uptime is determined by how often we need to add hardware, not the software.
NT needs more hardware, both in number of servers and in the amount of hardware in the machines. It also fails MUCH more frequently. Plus I can change almost anything in the Unix software, whether on a BSD or Linux without rebooting. So there is no down time. Nt needs to be rebooted for numeroud things.
Combine the above with cost of software and you see that any free Unix is a preferred choice.

whatever people say about microsoft products even though it is partially true, i feel that my bet should be on windows NT. it's not only because of the flexibility, friendliness, interoperability of windows nt it is also because of a tag called microsoft. it is these microsoft products that are still being used in the industry as a clear tool towards complete computerisation.so until people start thinking in terms of getting rid of windows or office or stuff like that the world is really going to be dominated by windows nt.this is what i feel even though i work on a non microsoft platform.

My bet is for Unix and specificaly Linux. Linux - because of its stability, flexibility, easy maintenance and high availability of support from numerous mailing lists.

Linux/Unix - it doesn't make a difference!
Tell u what-"Windoze is a virus with a mouse interface!" I average almost 3-4 crashes a day. On the other side, my Linux system works like a charm :)
Gone are the days when Windoze GUI was the only one available, with desktop like KDE,GNOME coming up who wants Windoze ! Windoze NT will probably need a reboot for even a mouse movement in the future! (ROTFL)
And let Micro$oft know the fact that today most corporates HAVE gone in for Linux as their mailservers, DNS and Webservers without the top management even knowing it! And given the kind of performance they are getting, it is unlikely that their bosses are going to mind it.

Windows NT... No doubt about that. The reasons are obvious. Microsoft can integrate everything from SQL to Web servers, browsers to backend tools and, of course, the development tools... And when the user will get everything bundled there is hardly any need to think of others. And also when it comes to stability Win NT is no less than it's competitors.

I haven't worked with Linux, so I don't know about it. I found Unix very cryptic at first, but now I'm a diehard Unix fan. It has some really powerful features like shell programming etc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is not a single virus so far which runs on Unix. And of course, it doesn't crash as often as Windows NT.
