It is indeed a holy was between the different flavors of UNIX and Windows NT. Microsoft products have a long and continuing history of bugs and loopholes in them. On the other hand, UNIX has been known to be stable, safe and secure. Windows is undoubtedly more user friendly then UNIX but with the development of several window managers and GUI softwares with the look and feel of Windows, there isn't much difference anymore between UNIX and Windows NT. Linux has an edge over other UNIX flavors in the sense that it is available freely over internet and there has been a lot of software development going on, even by the big software majors. Linux seems to be winning the holy war for PC users .. but for ISPs, SUN Solaris should be the #1 software.

Linux v/s Unix ? Linux is Unix. Anyway, let's get away from wrangling about semantics and get down to the nitty-gritty: Solaris on x86 platforms - Works on cheapie x86 platforms and provides the performance and reliability of Solaris.
Linux on x86 - For those willing and happy to get their hands dirty. Folks should also consider FreeBSD and SCO as alternatives for the x86 platforms.
Windows NT - It can wait... it's got a lot of catching up to do before it can qualify as a stable, sturdy and manageable OS.

Well, if your asking for a percentage win in the next 10 years, I would bet on NT. The world seems to be slowly migrating towards it due software applications and of course due to Microsoft's presence in this market.

Unix is my religion.
EAST OR WEST (NORTH OR SOUTH) Unix(or Linux) is the best. No votes for Windows NT.
I have a PC with Linux running on it and it is awesome. I have configured PPP and I have no problems at all. Also if people are interested in getting jazzy word processor/spread sheets kind of software for Linux just go to http://www.kde.org and you will know why people are writing more and more user friendly software for Linux/Unix now a days. It is free to download and more interesting thing is you have the liberty to download the source and play with it.

Linux - Number one.
Unix - Number two.
NT - Number three.

It's NT that's going to stay. Technology changes so fast and OS needs to adopt to new demands and for that NT is the only solution. NT may not be robust but can stand winds of change.

Very SIMPLE - UNIX! I've been involved in system designing and programming mission critical applications. One can point out to various technical publications about the performance, reliability (including microsoft's own) showing very clearly that UNIX is much superior for mission critical applications. Instead of that I want to tell the decision makers - who for most of the time go for marketing gimmicks - I have booted windows for so many times that I lost the count (and faith) but had to boot UNIX very few times!
NT is just a cool graphics interface which we developers, designers don't care. So why screw your business just because you'll get great marketing talk and some short term incentives! Go for UNIX! Remember Yahoo! - a $25 billion company - runs free BSD (a UNIX flavor) for all its web sites. Also Microsoft's Hotmail used to run on Solaris and now a days I hear so many complaints from Hotmail users (my wife the first) since they started migrating to NT.

Unix only
Windows NT no way!!!
Unix,Unix,Unix,Unix till I die. Only Unix can handle real volume and computing everything else is micky mouse.

Linux is the best way to go. It is the most robust of the three. Linux runs faster on Sun Sparc machines than Sun's own Solaris and its free. If you have a good system admin, Linux will be cheaper and far more productive than the other two. Btw, Linux is a flavor of UNIX.
On the other hand, if you plan to employ not-too-smart jobless high-school drop-outs as sysadmins and pay them just enough to have 3 square meals a day, Windows is the best bet. Any fool can make it work, but even bill gates can't (not so far) make it work well.

Unix has been evolving for 3 decades.
