Linux! It is the horse on which ISP's should rely on. Any ISP has to worry about the security issues and cost of set up. Linux has proved that it can handle loads even with cheaper hardware. In the security front, any holes found in any of the implementaions gets fixed faster than any commercial systems. Help, is available in many forms and at many places and at any time.

Linux is definitely a better platform at least for a webserver/ISP setup. Windows NT ?! hehehehehehe whata joke!! I am using Linux as a webserver on a 64kbps line and right next to it lies a Windows NT server platform with a better configuration. You should see the way Linux flies while Windoze NT craaawls..

In my opinion, it's a no-brainer: Unix requires very expensive hardware, and NT tends to be unreliable. Linux, however, combines the advantages of Unix -- availability, scalability, reliability, and power -- with the advantage of NT: it can run on cheap Intel x86-compatible hardware.

Linux. Windows NT just doesn't cut it. Commercial Unix is a good bet, but the cost involved with the setup is just too high.

Linux. Cheap. Reliable. Quickly growing. Solid reputation. Grass roots support. Linux *community*. Source code. Major new paradigm shift. Rapid bug fixes. It's not going away. And the Penguin is a heckuva lot cuter than that impersonal Windows corporate logo.

Linux is a good fit for Indian ISPs because
Microsoft = Expensive + Lack ofcontrol.
Linux = Reliable + Free + Open
India has manpower with technological skills and novice-friendliness does not count so much. Even in USA (I am in Colorado, USA), Linux is very popular among ISPs. In my opinion India's ISPs should go for Linux.

I would like to first comment on two issues :
(a) Most people who are against Microsoft do not understand why they have such a stand; they merely 'HATE' Microsoft because its IN to do so. If Microsoft does not give good products and is a mere marketing company, why don't they feel equally strongly about say, Hindustan Lever.
(b) A round of applause to Rediff for giving Meena Ganesh's email an equal chance of being read. That's extremely fair on their part; can't say all media people do the same.
As far as Linux/Unix/Windows goes, as a consumer I does not matter to me which OS my ISP is using as long as the service, speed of access and reliability is not compromised.
Thanx

I would go for Unix. Although Linux is a freeware and fast picking up, in terms of performance, I am apprehensive as Linux was created without much effort in the design of the entire operating system. Branded Unix OS performs better because every feature built in the OS is part of the original design and not many add-ons as it is in the case of Linux. But if your intention is to cut on costs as well, then Linux is a better bet.
The less said about Windows NT the better. I work on an NT machine and find that it is extremely slow, unstable and unreliable. You never know when it is going to crash.

Linux because it won't crash as often as windows

Certainly Linux or Unix but NEVER Windows NT. You face problem on Windows only after you buy it.

Unix is an established and a proven platform. Windows NT is however fast catching but with the added caveat of more and more bugs.
Linux is actually creating a new business style where the OS and the source code itself is freely available. This will adversely affect Windows NT as it is still new and would be probably in the same boat as Linux (except that the latter is free - a huge advantage)

1) Unix vs NT :

2) GNU/Linux vs Unix :
I don't understand the point in having a debate
about GNU/Linux vs Unix. GNU/Linux is one of the many Unix operating systems available out there. On the whole my vote is for Unix.
Regards,
Nagarajan <strictly speaking for myself>
PS : Why is it GNU/Linux and not just Linux ?

With no ownership of product and consequent (likely) lack of accountability and responsibility has to be OUT.
To achieve high scalability on NT is possible, but the
cost of the overall configuration is possibly high. And
there is always that in doubt- when the system will crash or whether it can handle real high volumes.
So my vote is for UNIX supplied by one of the well-known vendors.

Linux, of course. We have seen it gaining grounds from scratch. Besides, in India, where cost does matter a lot, what could be better than free?
Most of Linus users are ex-Windows users. In fact, Linux has changed the face of "UNIX".
I bet on Linux...

Windows NT because :
a. With it's dominance in the client-server segment one cannot wish away Windows-NT.
b. Another factor in favour of Windows NT is the presence of wide variety of tools, products and applications in which a substantial investment has already been made.
c. It is user friendly when compared with Unix or Linux.
But I do wish there should be a way to break the dominance of Microsoft

My advice to ISPs.....Unix will be worth putting their money on. Undoubtedly Unix servers are more reliable/robust. NT is yet to mature.
