I would bet on Linux, which I think can provide features of both Unix and Win NT and more flexible.

Linux.
Why?
o Unix is the birthplace of networking as we know it today. There is no other platform on which networking is as easy or as natural, or such an integral part of the system.
o Among the Unices today, Linux is the best choice, with a cost to performance ratio that is just impossible to beat. All the networking works right out of the box_!! You don't have to go around buying extra packs and all.
o Linux manages to filter in all the good properties of a Unix heritage, and adds a good dose of its own.

I feel Linux and Unix both have an upper hand on Windows NT . First of all they are more robust and for a software engineer like me have got much more to offer functionality wise. To top that Linux comes free of cost . Ain't that great. But if somebody wants support then Unix is a safer bid.

I have been using Unix and Windows for the past many years. For ease of use, Windows is definitely superior as you don't need to remember a maze of commands. But, when it comes to reliability and speed, which are much more important, I would definitely plump for Unix. Linux is an unknown area for me, so no comments on it.
My vote goes to Unix.

Linux,Linux,Linux,Linux,Linux,Linux, and Linux !!!
It is the best, OS, free and with a lot of help, FAQs, Howtos, etc., and comes with the source code. If you have the heart, mind and the inclination, go ahead and customise it to suit your own needs !!!
Thanx to Linus Trovalds, the man with the vision, and a really big heart( and of course, a very powerful brain !!!).

Unix - More popular and more powerful OS than others.

WINDOWS NT..No doubt about that. The reasons are obvious, Microsoft can integrate everything from SQL to Web Servers, Browsers to Backend tools, and of course the development tools...And when the user will get everything bundled there is hardly any need to think of others. And also when it comes to stability Win NT is no less than it's competitors..

If the ISP is my employer (who has money), I'd bet on Solaris with good old Netscape server (so that I can exploit multithreading ability plus powerful SSI). If the ISP is myself, I can safely and surely bet on Linux (with Apache obviously, plus mod perl, perhaps PHP too). Windows NT with IIS 4.0 attracts me only because of the bundled ASP 2.0. Quite OK for Intranets. Definitely not OK for 24 * 7 shops.

Ha! Probably it was just a rumour, but was there an attempt to run Hotmail servers or NT ? And what was the result ? And what is this Linux vs Unix stuff ?
In India Every consumer has a right to make their choice. Let the ISPs make them! If these ISP guys are worth their names, let them get all of these, run them and decide for themselves. First of all which one is the easiest and cheapest to get ? Run ? Maintain ? .....
I rest my case.

Although I never worked on Linux, I have high regards for Linux. My friend who is a faculty in IIT KGP swears by it. I personally worked on AT&T and SCO Unix for over 10 years. Our organisation is seriously thinking of becoming an ISP. I strongly recommend SUN SOLARIS and never, never, never Win-NT which we already have as the mail server OS (along with MS Exch 5.5.)
Thanks,
Sunit

Linux of course. Most people in India can not afford Windoze 98 let alone NT Client. We are a poor country and a country of intelligent people.

I'll bet my word on UNIX. Windows NT cannot be stable. Who would like to maintain a web server which will crash after every 5 minutes?

Unix is the best bet for ISP's then comes may be Linux and then NT.

Unix and Linux are lot more stable as servers
compared to NT. Need to have all 3 platforms so that users have choice...

Since I've heard RedHat Linux is good connections and networking and basically I am fond of Unix when it comes lot of attractions with world wide fellows offering new facilities to it, Its Linux! Linux will become 'win'ux and others with 'win' may have 'loss' as their prefix.

I definitely think that Windows NT has a strong edge in the Indian Market as it is more manageable and cost effective. For a lot of ISP's the cost factor is important. With Windows NT5 (now known as Windows 2000) likely to be released, NT5 looks even stronger.

Linux is free, it really is great, from an individual point of view you could go in for Linux. UNIX has and will always have its supporters, though you got to admit something as powerful as UNIX will nearly be impossible to replicate.
Windows NT, you got to give MS it's due credit, moreover where competition is concerned, it's tough to beat Bill Gates.
Personally, I'll go for Windows NT, more widely used and not as difficult to work with as UNIX. My knowledge of Linux is not adequate to comment on it.
